    On the Thermal History of Calculable Gauge Mediation

    Many messenger models with realistic gaugino masses are based on meta-stable vacua. In this work we study the thermal history of some of these models. Analyzing R-symmetric models, we point out that while some of the known messenger models clearly prefer the supersymmetric vacuum, there is a vast class of models where the answer depends on the initial conditions. Along with the vacuum at the origin, the high temperature thermal potential also possesses a local minimum far away from the origin. This vacuum has no analog at zero temperature. The first order phase transition from this vacuum into the supersymmetric vacuum is parametrically suppressed, and the theory, starting from that vacuum, is likely to evolve to the desired gauge-mediation vacuum.     R-symmetry and Supersymmetry Breaking at Finite Temperature

    We analyze the spontaneous U(1)RU(1)_R symmetry breaking at finite temperature for the simple O'Raifeartaigh-type model introduced in [1] in connection with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We calculate the finite temperature effective potential (free energy) to one loop order and study the thermal evolution of the model. We find that the R-symmetry breaking occurs through a second order phase transition. Its associated meta-stable supersymmetry breaking vacuum is thermodynamically favored at high temperatures and the model remains trapped in this state by a potential barrier, as the temperature lowers all the way until T=0.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures - Minor revisions, references added.     Blocking Coloured Point Sets

    This paper studies problems related to visibility among points in the plane. A point xx \emph{blocks} two points vv and ww if xx is in the interior of the line segment vwˉ\bar{vw}. A set of points PP is \emph{kk-blocked} if each point in PP is assigned one of kk colours, such that distinct points v,w∈Pv,w\in P are assigned the same colour if and only if some other point in PP blocks vv and ww. The focus of this paper is the conjecture that each kk-blocked set has bounded size (as a function of kk). Results in the literature imply that every 2-blocked set has at most 3 points, and every 3-blocked set has at most 6 points. We prove that every 4-blocked set has at most 12 points, and that this bound is tight. In fact, we characterise all sets {n1,n2,n3,n4}\{n_1,n_2,n_3,n_4\} such that some 4-blocked set has exactly nin_i points in the ii-th colour class. Amongst other results, for infinitely many values of kk, we construct kk-blocked sets with k1.79...k^{1.79...} points

    Solitonic supersymmetry restoration

    Q-balls are a possible feature of any model with a conserved, global U(1) symmetry and no massless, charged scalars. It is shown that for a broad class of models of metastable supersymmetry breaking they are extremely influential on the vacuum lifetime and make seemingly viable vacua catastrophically short lived. A net charge asymmetry is not required as there is often a significant range of parameter space where statistical fluctuations alone are sufficient. This effect is examined for two supersymmetry breaking scenarios. It is found that models of minimal gauge mediation (which necessarily have a messenger number U(1)) undergo a rapid, supersymmetry restoring phase transition unless the messenger mass is greater than 10^8 GeV. Similarly the ISS model, in the context of direct mediation, quickly decays unless the perturbative superpotential coupling is greater than the Standard Model gauge couplings.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, minor comments added, accepted for publication in JHE

    Development of prokaryotic cell-free systems for synthetic biology

    Prokaryotic cell-free systems are currently heavily used for the production of protein that can be otherwise challenging to produce in cells. However, historically cell-free systems were used to explore natural phenomena before the advent of genetic modification and transformation technology. Recently, synthetic biology has seen a resurgence of this historical use of cell-free systems as a prototyping tool of synthetic and natural genetic circuits. For these cell-free systems to be effective prototyping tools, an understanding of cell-free system mechanics must be established that is not purely protein-expression driven. Here we discuss the development of E. coli-based cell-free systems, with an emphasis on documenting published extract and energy preparation methods into a uniform format. We also discuss additional considerations when applying cell-free systems to synthetic biology

    Growth and Yield Response of Irish Potato (Solanum Tuberosum) to Climate in Jos-South, Plateau State, Nigeria

    The study investigates the response of Irish potato to some climate variables in Jos-South Local Government Area of Plateau State Nigeria The data collected include yield of Irish potato in tons per hectare and climatic data for twenty years 1989-2009 These data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS and later on subjected to correlation and regression statistical techniques so as to determine the relationship between yield of Irish Potato and climatic elements for different phenological stages of crop growth The results show that there is no significant variation in most of the agro-climatic data between the different years High variations in the values of agro-climatic are only found within total rainfall rainfall in July May and to some extent rainfall in April and June Findings on the correlation analysis show that at sprouting to emergence vegetative stage maximum and minimum temperatures significantly correlate with Irish potato at 1 significance level respectively Also total rainfall correlates significantly with yield at tuber set initiation stage at 5 significance level In the same vein minimum temperature significantly correlates with yield at tuber bulking ripenin stage at 1 significant level Step-wise regression analysis selected two critical elements negatively influencing the yield of Irish Potato in Jos-South These are minimum temperature at tuber bulking ripening stage and rainfall in Jul

    Collective dynamics of fermion clouds in cigar-shaped traps

    The propagation of zero sound in a spin-polarized Fermi gas under harmonic confinement is studied as a function of the mean-field interactions with a second Fermi gas. A local-density treatment is compared with the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the propagation of density distortions in a trapped two-component Fermi gas at temperature T=0.2 Tf. The response of the gas to the sudden creation of a sharp hole at its centre is also studied numerically.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

    Direct Mediation and Metastable Supersymmetry Breaking for SO(10)

    We examine a metastable N=1\mathcal{N}=1 Macroscopic SO(N) SQCD model of Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We introduce various baryon and meson deformations, including multitrace operators and explore embedding an SO(10) parent of the standard model into two weakly gauged flavour sectors. Direct fundamental messengers and the symmetric pseudo-modulus messenger mediate SUSY breaking to the MSSM. Gaugino and sfermion masses are computed and compared for each deformation type. We also explore reducing the rank of the magnetic quark matrix of the ISS model and find an additional fundamental messenger.Comment: 43 pages, Latex. Version to appear in JHEP
